Does it really matter?

There was another article this weekend on Stalin and Shostakovich. I have a personal opinion on the matter, however, I'm not certain it makes a difference. Whatever speaks to you in the music is your reality. In truth, he could have been both a dedicated communist and anti-Stalin. There were plenty of those. After all, Stalinism was less about communism than it was about Stalin, his ego, and his terrible paranoia. Plenty of dedicated communists were murdered by Stalin and his gang of criminals...and even if Shostakovich was not a true 'Soviet dissident,' does that make his music any less powerful? Does that mitigate the power of his string quartets and symphonies?
