COBRA and the Bee Menace

Everyone who reads this blog needs to follow this link. Had me laughing so hard in my office today I was falling out of my chair and CS had to come in and see what I was laughing so hard at. The article is from McSweeney's online and is about what you should do to counteract three different "threats to the election." For example:
So if you are a Democrat, do not appear in public on Election Day. The terrorists will be able to identify you as a Democrat by your fashionable casual clothing, your look of concern when you see litter or starving children, and your hatred of America.
Funny stuff. After I spent some time there (hadn't been there in awhile) I remembered to see if they had better archives than the last time and found a story I've been looking for since I first read it a couple of years ago. It was published in the Best Non-Required Reading collection for 2002 but was originally a McSweeney's piece.

Remember GI Joe? No...not the old-fashioned version that has been around forever - I'm talking about the silly GI Joe comic/cartoon/toy line that was so popular with kids (guy kids) back in the mid-1980s. Our version of My Little Pony and Cabbage Patch Kids (I will save my discussion of Garbage Pail Kids and MUSCLE men for another day - old obsessions of mine.). Anyway...this story is written as a journal by a recruit for the international terrorist organization COBRA. I won't quote it - it'll spoil how funny it is. Joe Bob says, "Check it out."

This would be funnier if I didn't think that the current administration was trying to set something up in anticipation of actually delaying the election. I mean, what else is a nepotistic chickenhawkish powermonger with a yen for religious favoritism supposed to do when the poll figures are against him?

I tend to agree - I was more than a little disturbed by that little 'trial balloon' that was sent up last Monday on 'delaying' the election. The good thing was that responses from just about everyone (left AND right, plus media, plus moderates, etc.) was so uniformly against it that the administration was forced to quickly pull back on the reins and come out officially against it. But that they had even had the thought was more than a little disturbing. Just more evidence (sadly) of this administration's willingness to do anything to keep power, legal and illegal.

Before I forget, thanks for pointing up McSweeney's btw. Not only was the COBRA piece a side-splitter, but I also loved the list of infrequently heard-of James Bond movies, among others. :D

And just in case other readers haven't seen it, I also found this delicious little page:

http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/bush/

which I plan to use in smacking Bush supporters (yes, there are still many of them out there) upside the head with. Like a gopher-smashing game at Chuck E. Cheese's -- must earn enough points to tip the election.
