Why not Kinky?

Well, its 7pm on a Monday and here I am still at work, trying to finish prepping a laptop for a user who dropped a massive last minute request on me and waiting for the air conditioning in the building to turn off in a few minutes. Anyway...I remembered something I meant to post about last week after my Texas trip and am doing so now...

So...there we were. SG and I were in his car, driving over to the Trinity campus in San Antonio, my old haunts. We're stopped at a stoplight and I noticed that the car in front of us has an odd bumpersticker. It looks like a Texas flag - red and white stripes with a blue area that has a single star. Except that the star isn't the lone star, its a yellow Star of David and the writing on the red and white stripes says "Why Not Kinky?"

I ask SG about it and he remarks that apparently, Kinky Friedman - songwriter, singer, author, salsa maker, dope smoker...that Kinky Friedman - is running for Governor of Texas in 2006 (as an Independent). His campaign slogans include:
"How hard can it be?" and
"Why the hell not?"

His campaign platform involves making the declawing of cats illegal. According to an article in the NYT last fall:
People who think this is frivolous should come back as a cat," he said. "I'd be a Buddhist, except for Richard Gere.
This whole thing is apparently serious. It helps that the office of Governor of Texas, as Al Gore (unfortunately) failed to make clear back in 2000 is largely ceremonial (indeed...it has some of the least authority of any governor in the US). The real power in Texas exists in the legislature and with the Lieutenant Governor's ability to control the agenda of the state senate (unlike most states, Lieutenant Governors in Texas run on their own and it isn't uncommon to have a governor and Lieutenant Governor be from different parties).

Still...the whole thing is amusing. Heck...how can Kinky be any worse than Arnold, Jessie Ventura, Sonny Bono, etc.? A race to keep our eyes on for the next couple of years - if for nothing else but the entertainment value.
