Major League Baseball informed Washington today that the Montreal Expos would relocate to the city in time for Opening Day in 2005, returning baseball to the nation's capital after a 33-year absence.

The official word came in a telephone call from Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig to Mayor Anthony A. Williams at 4:05 p.m., Williams's spokeswoman Sharon Gang told reporters. The announcement ended a two-year saga in which baseball has sought to find a new home for the ailing Expos, who have lost millions of dollars over the years and have one of the lowest attendance records in baseball.
