More torture news

So...remember when El Presidente and his administration swore to us the 'company line' that the torture in Iraq was an isolated incident perpetrated by a unit out of control?

Well...not so fast, my friend. According to this morning's NYT, the same harsh interrogation tactics that appeared at Abu Ghraib are practiced at Camp X-Ray (Guantanamo, Cuba).
The people, military guards, intelligence agents and others, described in interviews with The New York Times a range of procedures that included treatment they said was highly abusive occurring over a long period of time, as well as rewards for prisoners who cooperated with interrogators.
Watch this story, folks. This has the potential to be a major PR disaster for the administration at exactly the time it isn't needed (two weeks before the election). With Bush's poll numbers in freefall and Kerry surging forward after El Presidente's disastrous performance in the debates, Karl Rove and company want to put the focus on John Kerry...making him the issue rather than allow people to focus on reality. Stories like this, plus the daily news regarding the mess in Iraq keeps the focus squarely on the administration - the news cycle controls them instead of them controlling the news cycle (if that makes any sense - I'm tired this morning).

Something to keep your eye on in the days to come.
