A Win's a Win...but Guzman still stinks

Well...I guess that's why Carlos Baerga isn't a great alternative at 2B. The Nats went into the top of the 9th inning of last night's game against Oakland with a 4-1 lead, but then a costly error on a two out throw for a force-out at second was high and skipped off Baerga's glove - two runs scored and the Nats had to sweat a bit before finishing up with the 4-3 win and their second straight series sweep. The win was the Nationals' seventh in a row and the team has won an outstanding 9 of 10 games on this homestand. Not bad considering just last week, I was hoping for .500 against the Braves and Marlins. Always happy to be wrong. :-)

The guys on TV were pretty quick to say that it was Baerga's fault. For that matter, so did the Post's article on the game, going so far as to say that had Vidro been out there...the game would have been over. I'm not so sure. I watched the replay over and over and it looked like the ball was sailing high. I would have awarded the error to Vinny Castilla for the awful throw...I'm not sure Vidro would have managed to catch it. But...a win's a win, so I'm not going to complain.

That said...if Guzman wasn't such a crappy hitter, it wouldn't have been an issue. The Guz went an atrocious 0 for 3 with 1 K and 6(!!) left on base. Here is a recap of his three "official" plate appearances in the game (for some reason, baseball counts sacrifices as not being official ABs - don't know when that started):

Bottom 2nd Inning: Guzman comes up with two out and two on base (Baerga on second, Schneider on first). He grounds into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Bottom 3rd Inning: Guzman again comes up with two out and two on base (Castilla on second, Schneider at first). He strikes out to end the inning.

Bottom 5th Inning: Guzman again comes up with two out and two on base (this time, Baerga is on third base and again...Schneider is at first). He proceeds to line out to RF to end the inning.

So...I'm thinking "rally killer" might be a good nickname for ol' Guz. *sigh*

The Watch update for today:
AB: 60 H: 9 AVG: .150 K: 11 BB: 2 XBH: 1 LOB: 35 R: 3 RBI: 2

In a word: Yuck.
